The Role of Standards in the Management of
Occupational Health and Safety

This workshop will focus on national and international standards for managing occupational health and safety.  We have moved beyond the time when the “rules” were defined by externally imposed government regulations, through the “human factors” approach of risk analysis, personnel selection and training and the design of work, and into the new era of participative management. This reflects a new standards-based emphasis on the organizational aspects of occupational health and safety.  In applying a management system framework organizations can effectively identify the risks of its operation, implement the activities necessary to eliminate or control them, assess their effectiveness and take action to continually improve its OH&S performance.

Canada has recently adopted CSA Z45001 – Occupational health and safety management systems — Requirements with guidance for use, as a national standard of Canada. This is an adoption, with Canadian deviations, of the ISO Standard 45001 (first edition, 2018-03). The transition has begun to phase out CSA Z1000, Occupational health and safety management and to align the series of standards under it to CSA Z45001.
This workshop will provide an overview of CSA Z45001 and the CSA Z1000 series of standards on occupational health and safety management:

  • CAN/CSA-Z1001, Occupational health and safety training;
  • CAN/CSA-Z1002, Occupational health and safety — Hazard identification and elimination and risk assessment and control;
  • CAN/CSA-Z1003, Psychological health and safety in the workplace;
  • CSA Z1004, Workplace ergonomics — A management and implementation standard;
  • CSA Z1005, Incident investigation;
  • CSA Z1006, Management of work in confined spaces;
  • CSA Z1007, Hearing loss prevention program (HLPP) management;
  • CSA Z1010, Management of work in extreme conditions; and
  • CSA Z1600, Emergency and continuity management program.

and the two others now under development:

  • CSA Z1008, Management of impairment in the workplace; and
  • CSA Z1011, Work disability management.
