Sight & Hearing Loss: Living the Experience

ABOUT THE SESSION

This presentation shares statistics of eye injuries in the workplace, hearing loss caused by the workplace and overall impact on the employee, family and environment. As this presentation is virtual a simulation experience of having vision & hearing loss is not possible but will include a “tactile tour” involving being blindfolded and trying to identify objects tactually. Resources including agencies and technical support will be shared for future reference in the workplace.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Cheryl Ramey, Professor & Coordinator of the Deafblind & Intervenor Studies Program
George Brown College

Cheryl Ramey has worked in the field of congenital deafblindness and multiple disabilities for the past 34 years. In the most recent 19 years she has been teaching and mentoring students as a professor at George Brown College in the Deafblind & Intervenor Studies Program. Cheryl also independently consults for a variety of organizations in Canada and internationally. Cheryl has presented at numerous conferences & symposiums on deafblindness at Deafblind International World Conferences in Portugal, Australia, Italy, and France. This has included a workshop at a Workplace Safety Conference sharing the impact of workplace vision and hearing loss on the employee and their families.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Prevalence of vision and eye health issues & the common symptoms that impact the person on a daily basis.
  • Types of accommodations needed for someone with a vision or hearing loss.
  • The impact on an individual’s independence and need to adapt the environment & how they do things.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This session will be beneficial to professionals in HR as well as supervisors in the safety and health community or anyone interested in this topic.

Non-Member Registrations – Cancellations received at least 72 hours (3 days) prior to the event date are accepted without charge.  If cancellation is not received by the specified time frame the fee of $25.00 Non-Member fee is applicable. Substitutions are welcome.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

ABOUT THE SESSION

This session will focus on how the brain learns using the five human senses and how the brain translates the senses into a type of picture for better learning retention. What does safety look like, why is it one of the hardest subjects to understand. How a picture can be the most effective tool for our brains to understand and remember.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Safety Services Manitoba

As Director, Safety Services and Training, Adam leads the Occupational Safety and Road Safety teams at Safety Services Manitoba.  Adam plays a key role at SSM within the Leadership Team. Adam leads the trainers and consultants.  Adam has been part of SSM’s team since 2009. During his time with SSM, Adam has trained thousands of students and consulted numerous companies throughout Manitoba. Adam’s sincere dedication and communication skills have become his trademark with all companies who have worked with him.

  • What the true meaning of “Safety” means.
  • How the human senses create a picture in our minds.
