Joey Bellino is a Project Manager in Pinchin’s Occupational Health and Safety group. Joey holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Environmental Science from the University of Manitoba. Joey also holds a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) accreditation and recently completed the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) exam to receive his Certification in Industrial Hygiene (CIH) designation.
Joey has more than 18 years of comprehensive experience in managing occupational hygiene programs for a research-intensive university that spans a variety of workplaces and projects. Joey’s volunteer work includes serving on the American Industrial Hygiene (AIHA) Manitoba local section executive board for the past 9 years.
ABOUT THE SESSION:
During the session Joey will touch on several topics pertaining to Confined Spaces. Joey will highlight some of the hazards associated with Confined Spaces. He will also provide a definition of confined space from both a Federal and Provincial regulatory standpoint and outline what has recently changed Federally. The presentation will also provide information on what a Confined Space program should look like within your organization to ensure you meet compliance.

Wayne will explore the option of selecting counterweight systems as a possible, viable option when choosing fall arrest systems for use in our workplaces.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Wayne Donnelly is President of Tuff Safety Solutions Canada Ltd. and has been assessing, developing, implementing, and delivering Fall Protection, Scaffold and Confined Space programs for over 31 years! He has been a member of the Canadian Standards Association since 2003 and is currently Vice-Chair – CSA Z259 – Fall Protection, Chair – TSC Z259.17 – Selection and Use of Active Fall Protection Equipment, Chair – Z797 – Code of Practice for Access Scaffold and voting member – CSA Z1006 – Management of Work in Confined Spaces committees.

Measurement Assessment and Characterization of Impulsive Noise

ABOUT THE SESSION:
Exposures to high-level impulsive noises such as collisions of objects, firearms, or explosions significantly increase the risk for developing noise induced hearing loss. When exposures exceed peak levels of around 140 dB, the damage mechanism changes from metabolic exhaustion to mechanical destruction of the inner and outer hair cells. Although Impulse and impact noise are generated through different processes, they are often grouped into impulsive noise.
The selection of microphone, preamplifier, and processing system are critical to capturing high-quality data. In many cases, recordings are more beneficial than capturing a peak level or a single integrated level to understand the exposure and to mitigate the risk. The risk of noise induced hearing loss can be reduced by appropriate selection of hearing protection devices.
Level dependent passive or electronic protectors, mufflers and noise suppressors can provide a range of noise level reductions and improve communication in critical jobs. However, hearing protectors are not the only tool in the hearing-loss prevention toolbox. With firearms, noise suppressors can reduce exposures at the ear by 10 to 30 dB. Similarly, changes to processes where impact noise is prevalent can reduce noise levels dramatically. Estimating the risk of hearing loss has been challenging due to the range of damage risk criteria (DRC) available to the occupational safety and health professional. The advantages and disadvantages of several DRCs will be presented.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
CAPT William J. Murphy, PhD, United States Public Health Services
William J. Murphy is a Captain in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and is coordinator for the Hearing Loss Prevention cross sector for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. He is an active member of the National Hearing Conservation Association and a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. His research has focused on hearing protection devices, audiometric testing methods, and characterization of the risk of noise-induced hearing loss due to impulse and impact noise.

Building Evacuation in Health Care

The presentation will discuss building evacuation with a focus on evacuation in Healthcare facilities as Healthcare buildings operate differently from most other buildings. Evacuation measures begin with the design of the building and a good fire plan so building occupants can quickly get out when the fire alarm sounds. For most buildings that is all that is required however in Healthcare facilities patients are for the most part unable to self – evacuate so a number of different protocols will be discussed. Lastly the presentation will look at the future of evacuation and some of the Building Code changes that are shaping the future of evacuation strategies.

Did you know that doing nothing about hearing loss can increase your risk for dementia? Research by Dr. Frank Lin at Johns Hopkins revealed, even a mild hearing loss, left untreated can double the risk for dementia, a moderate loss can triple the risk, and a severe hearing loss, left untreated, can put you at five times more risk for dementia. We hear with our brain, not our ears. Our ears are only sensors to pick up sound and send it to our brain for processing. We are born with 31,000 neural hair cells for our brain to recognize sounds and understand speech. Loud noise exposure, change in blood flow, ototoxic drugs, and aging can permanently damage or kill some of these hearing hairs cells, making it harder for the brain to process sound. The brain is then put under stress. Hearing loss can be very exhausting, leaving you feeling fatigued.

Overview of NIOSH Respirator Approval Program

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) certifies conformance of respirators in the United States to requirements codified in federal regulations. Title 42, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 84 (42 CFR 84) includes requirements for atmosphere-supplying and air-purifying respirators. NIOSH NPPTL uses established Standard Operating Procedures, policies, guidance documents such as the Standard Application Procedures (SAP) and Standard Test Procedures to ensure NIOSH-approved respirators meet the minimum requirements described in 42 CFR 84. This presentation will provide an overview of the NIOSH Respirator Approval Program, including an update about recent activities:
- Assessing conformance of N95 filtering facepiece respirators for use in healthcare settings in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between NIOSH and U.S. Food and Drug Administration
- Implementing the NIOSH bivariate anthropometric panel
- Updating policies to recognize National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1986 Standard on Respiratory Protection Equipment for Tactical and Technical Operations
- Supporting other priority NIOSH NPPTL standard development initiative

Building Stress Resilience

Introduction to the new Manufacturing Ergonomic Risk Evaluation Tool (MERET)
ABOUT THE PRESENTATION:
A new ergonomic assessment tool has been developed by Andrew Dolhy, CPE in partnership with Motor Coach Industries and supported by a grant from the Research and Workplace Innovation Program of the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba.
This assessment tool provides a quantitative risk evaluation score for both existing jobs as well as tasks in the development stage of production.Andrew will explain the tool’s risk categories, how to use the excel-based program and the validity and reliability testing that went into the MERET at this session.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1) An introduction to the 12 risk elements and their relation to the outcome scores.
2) How to evaluate tasks that are observable or in the pre-production stage.
3) The validity and reliability of the evaluation tool and how to properly use it in the workplace.
