ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING and WORKSHOP – June 7, 2019

The Role of Standards in the Management of
Occupational Health and Safety

This workshop will focus on national and international standards for managing occupational health and safety.  We have moved beyond the time when the “rules” were defined by externally imposed government regulations, through the “human factors” approach of risk analysis, personnel selection and training and the design of work, and into the new era of participative management. This reflects a new standards-based emphasis on the organizational aspects of occupational health and safety.  In applying a management system framework organizations can effectively identify the risks of its operation, implement the activities necessary to eliminate or control them, assess their effectiveness and take action to continually improve its OH&S performance.

Canada has recently adopted CSA Z45001 – Occupational health and safety management systems — Requirements with guidance for use, as a national standard of Canada. This is an adoption, with Canadian deviations, of the ISO Standard 45001 (first edition, 2018-03). The transition has begun to phase out CSA Z1000, Occupational health and safety management and to align the series of standards under it to CSA Z45001.
This workshop will provide an overview of CSA Z45001 and the CSA Z1000 series of standards on occupational health and safety management:

  • CAN/CSA-Z1001, Occupational health and safety training;
  • CAN/CSA-Z1002, Occupational health and safety — Hazard identification and elimination and risk assessment and control;
  • CAN/CSA-Z1003, Psychological health and safety in the workplace;
  • CSA Z1004, Workplace ergonomics — A management and implementation standard;
  • CSA Z1005, Incident investigation;
  • CSA Z1006, Management of work in confined spaces;
  • CSA Z1007, Hearing loss prevention program (HLPP) management;
  • CSA Z1010, Management of work in extreme conditions; and
  • CSA Z1600, Emergency and continuity management program.

and the two others now under development:

  • CSA Z1008, Management of impairment in the workplace; and
  • CSA Z1011, Work disability management.

PRESENTER:

Norma McCormick is founder and principal of Corporate Health Works, Inc.  She has served on several CSA Technical Committees: CSA Z1000 – Occupational Health and Safety Management System,  Z1600 – Emergency and Continuity Management, and Z1005 Incident Prevention and Investigation. She chaired Z1004 responsible for developing a General Workplace Ergonomics standard. At the international level, Norma heads the Canadian delegations to two ISO Technical Committees: TC 292 – Security and Resilience and PC 283 that developed ISO 45001 – Occupational Health and Safety Management System and is convenor  of TC 283, Working Group 2, now developing ISO 45003, Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace. For her volunteer contribution to standards development to CSA, Norma received CSA’s Award of Merit in June 2006. She was elected to the CSA Group Board of Directors in 2013.

September 7, 2018 – The Safety Pass – Responsibilities and Solutions

New worker orientations are a legislated responsibility of the Employer for the workplaces that their employees work on. It is also the Employers responsibility to ensure the Contractors (Maintenance staff, Trades, Cleaners, etc.) hired to work for them understand their responsibilities on site as well. These orientations are legislated and therefore contain a lot of the same information that takes time to review and to ensure the worker understands the information. The Safety Pass is a fully transferable (site to site) online orientation program that allows Employers to meet their responsibilities while reducing the amount of time workers review repeat information and allows the Employer to focus more time and effort on the site-specific information required to provide a healthy and safe work environment.

What you will learn:

  1. Understand what a Prime Contractor’s responsibilities are.
  2. Understand what a Contractor’s responsibilities are.
  3. Understand how The Safety Pass system can help you save time and money while meeting your legislated responsibilities.

Who Should Attend:

There will be a draw for a free pair of prescription eyeglasses for those in attendance, and a couple of runner up gift cards for 2nd and 3rd place winners!

About Christine and her business

I have worked in the optical industry since 1999. I have experience in many different store environments, from expensive doctor’s offices to Walmart vision. Having seen many changes in this industry especially with the surge of online prescription eyeglasses, I sourced out my own inexpensive products and eventually in 2014 Eye GO Mobile Optical was born. We offer internet pricing plus professional service, and mobile services including safety eyewear to workplaces, and visits for people in care homes & hospitals.

Who should come? Everyone!

Committee members, safety professionals, anyone who has ruined their glasses by playing sports, painting, welding, weed trimming, etc. Business owners/managers who need to provide safety eyewear to their staff.
