IPAM BREAKFAST MEETING, OCTOBER 21, 2016

Come join your IPAM colleagues on Friday, October 21, 2016 for a presentation on:

Cytotoxic Spill Drill; successes and challenges.

The toxicity of hazardous medications, including cytotoxic drugs can present risks to those who handle or come in contact with them. Anyone working with patients receiving cytotoxic medications is at risk of exposure and should be trained in the proper spill cleanup of hazardous medication waste, contaminated materials and blood and body fluid/excreta.

WRHA OESH and HSC Oncology Program partnered and developed a Cytotoxic Spill Drill Checklist and began conducting Cytotoxic Spill drills at HSC in fall of 2015. The Cytotoxic Spill Drill was developed to gauge awareness of the existing hazardous medication spill management policy and provides an objective, standardized, evidence informed tool to evaluate spill response processes. This presentation will highlight the successes and challenges of implementing the Cytotoxic Spill Drills at an acute care facility that delivers cytotoxic medications to a large oncology population on a daily basis. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the adaptability to the community and LTC settings.
