IPAM Meeting Friday, February 28, 2014

Join your IPAM colleagues on Friday, February 28, 2014, for a presentation by Brian Tanner of Fire Plan Strategies. This breakfast meeting will cover the 4 pillars of Section 2.8 (Emergency Planning) of the Manitoba Fire Code, namely: the fire safety plan, staff training, posted emergency procedures, and fire drills.

Brian will explain what is required and why it’s important from the perspective of the building owner, the occupants, and finally from a city fire inspector.

Speaker

Presenting this breakfast meeting will be Brian Tanner, Operations Manager at Fire Plan Strategies. Brian has experience as a NFPA Fire Inspector, a Fire and Life Safety Educator, and as a City of Winnipeg Licensed Fire Extinguisher Trainer.

Fire Plan Strategies is a Winnipeg-based company that create evacuation maps, design fire safety plans, and deliver fire extinguisher and fire evacuation training for building owners and managers across Canada. They have been involved in many high-profile local projects, including the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Investors Group Field, MTS Centre, Winnipeg International Airport, as well as countless commercial, industrial, and residential buildings of all kinds.

Founded by a retired Winnipeg Fire Inspector (former high rise specialist), Fire Plan Strategies is committed to helping all organizations meet their requirements under the fire code and provide a safer environment for the occupants of their facilities. All of their staff are NFPA accredited in the varying areas of expertise (Fire Inspectors, Fire and Life Safety Educators, etc).

IPAM Monthly Meeting – December 13, 2013

Join your IPAM colleagues on Friday, December 13, 2013 for a presentation by Yaba Cisse from Onsite Equipment Training. This breakfast meeting topic will cover “6 Killer Habits of Aerial Boom Lift Operators” and what to look for when hiring an equipment training service.

Speaker

Yaba first started working for a well-known Equipment rental company in Manitoba in 2008 when he first operated heavy equipment on a regular basis.  After his initial training he quickly began operating various types of mobile powered equipment and learned an extensive amount of knowledge from inspecting and operating them on a day to day basis.  He accumulated a good understanding of the functions and limitations of heavy equipment and later went on to achieve certification as an Ives certified trainer.

Since then he has trained and certified over 800 powered mobile equipment operators (ranging from forklifts, aerial lifts, and skid steers) and takes a simple and passionate approach to operator safety training.  He has consistently delivered courses that have met both the needs of the employers and employees in a convenient, practical, and time effective way.
His company, Onsite Equipment Training Services was established to create a new more practical way to offer powered mobile equipment training and is committed to increasing operator safe practices and reducing the risks associated with getting the job done.

This breakfast meeting will be presented by David Hughes, Safety Consultant.  Inspection of Steel Storage Racking This breakfast meeting topic will introduce how to inspect steel storage racking, recognize general racking hazards and the related CSA standard.

Speaker

David Hughes is currently an instructor and Safety Resource Officer in Winnipeg, MB. He has excelled in senior management positions in a variety of different fields including manufacturing, hospitality and retail. David has been involved and continues to work with the transforming of employee culture. He is active in measuring internal health & safety programs and has performed multiple internal facility audits.

David is a published author, conference speaker, professional communicator, adult educator and business owner. He has worked in the manufacturing industry for over three decades holding numerous positions including union representative, foreman, manager, trainer and business owner. David has extensive experience with negotiating contracts and sensitive matters on behalf of both employers and employees. Throughout his career, he has excelled at training numerous workers and implementing quality control measures to ensure the highest of standards.

David has also owned and operated two successful businesses including a Fair Trade retail store with his spouse, in Winnipeg, Manitoba and a Print Shop in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He has presented to groups of varying sizes on topics such as Criminal Liability/Due Diligence, Auditing Techniques, Leadership Development, Communication Excellence, Stress Management, Team Work and Time Management. He is an avid researcher of the material and topics he teaches.

The Canadian Museum For Human Rights

The purpose of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is to explore the subject of human rights, with special but not exclusive reference to Canada, in order to enhance the public’s understanding of human rights, to promote respect for others and to encourage reflection and dialogue (Museums Act).

The CMHR is Canada’s fifth National Museum and the first national museum to be located outside Ottawa. It will also be the first technology based museum in Canada.

Currently most of the base building work is completed and work has commenced in the interior fit up; the CMHR is scheduled to open to the public in 2014.

Speaker

Marco Rosales has approximately 15 years of experience in the Health and Safety field which includes work in the manufacturing, health care and construction industries. He is a graduate from the Red River College’s Health and Safety Program and has a Gold Seal Certified Construction Safety Coordinator designation from the Canadian Construction Association. He is a past board member of the CSSE and has been involved in several volunteer opportunities.

Asbestos and You

This session will include background on Asbestos, Regulations and Bulk Sampling.  This session provides an overview of what asbestos is, what regulations are applicable, bulk sampling requirements, and how to collect the sample and read the lab report.

Jason Combe

As the manager of hazardous materials at Pinchin Environmental’s Winnipeg office, Jason Combe brings over a decade of experience in hazardous materials assessment, control and management to the office’s broad range of clients. His unique background and skill set give him an advantage in offering clients problem-solving strategies that combine in-depth knowledge with a hands-on, practical approach. A member of the Pinchin Environmental team since 2005, Jason has provided extensive consulting and inspection services for a wide range of projects, ranging from short-term abatements to a large-scale office complex, health care and education facility operations. Prior to joining Pinchin, Jason was with a contracting firm specializing in hazardous materials remediation. As a contractor working on numerous projects in the residential, industrial and commercial fields, he specialized in asbestos remediation while also handling and removing other hazardous materials including moulds, lead and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) light ballasts. Jason also gained invaluable experience with hazardous materials and their controls during his early career as a nuclear, biological and chemical non-commissioned officer with the United States Military.

Topic:  Overview of key changes to the CSA Z94.4  Standard entitled Selection, Use and Care of Respirators.

Key Changes include:

  • New control banding method for selection of respirators for bioaerosols without established occupational exposure limits that are capable of causing infection, adverse or allergic response
  • New APFs (Assigned Protection Factors)
  • Training has been expanded and includes a new component on fit tester competency
  • Change-out procedures no longer allow for the use of warning properties
  • Several new appendices to help with the new sections such as selection of respirators for bioaerosols, fit tester competency and illustrations of acceptable facial hair for tight fitting respirators.

Provision of Healthcare is a challenge in a rapidly evolving environment.  Safety challenges in Healthcare are huge given the unpredictability of human behavior especially when compounded by illness.  The presentation looks at the challenges of keeping a large organization spread across the entire spectrum of population and in various facilities, fire safe.  Compounding the challenge is a rapidly evolving field of practice where today’s norms are tomorrow’s antiquated ways.  The past, present and future of fire safety for a large organization (healthcare) is overviewed with some practical solutions that anyone can use in their own safety practice.
